At long last, in the gloaming, lights, like fireflies winking and dancing, became visible through the trees. Laurin heaved a sigh of relief, then tensed as he heard water slosh.
“Who’s there?” he called, straining his eyes.
“Laurin? Is that you?” a voice came from the dark.
“Sven! You scared the living daylights out of me!” Laurin said, recognizing his friend’s voice. “What are you doing out here at this time?”
“A few of us have been on the lookout for you,” Sven answered, coming out of a thick stand of mangroves. “We thought you would be back days ago! Your ma is worried sick.”
