Part 4 – The Hunter’s Prey – by E.P. Marcellin
Dendera idly swirled the wine in her glass, watching the firelight reflected in its ruby depths, thinking it looked like so much blood held captive. The High Priestess of Assim, the Great Serpent, was droning on about the role of the priestesses in the coming city-wide purification, but Dendera was not listening. She had done the night vigil and then accepted offerings all day. She was tired, her feet hurt, and the monotonous lecture, along with the fire’s heat and the wine, was sending her into a stupor. Kaphiri was in the midst of a blistering dry season, but the sacred fires were always kept blazing in the temple of Assim. Dendera thought that serpents must crave the heat, being cold blooded creatures. Personally, she favoured the rainy season, with its cool winds and tremendous storms, but that probably didn’t make her a very fit servant for a serpent god, so she kept her preferences to herself.
