The water was pleasantly warm, though the sand sucking at his heels felt strange. Laurin was more used to mud, which had a better grip than the sand. It could almost have been enjoyable, the gentle waves rolling in, the water lapping around his legs, until something brushed his ankle. The water was up to his chest; he would have to swim soon. But he didn’t get the chance. Something twined around his leg, a grip like iron, and tugged him off his feet. The bucket he had carefully kept above the water spilled in as he was pulled under, fighting the urge to struggle. Dendera cried out on the beach before water filled his ears.
